In this project we aim at understanding the causal role of telomere size in the age-related increase in cancer risk. In particular, through the use of conditional transgenics, we intend to manipulate telomere length in both cancer cells and cells of the surrounding microenvironment to modulate rates of tumor formation. Additionally, we will ask whether ectopic telomerase expression (normally thought of as a carcinogen) actually promotes cancer in both young and old individuals.
